Special needs catered for

As autism specialists we aim to offer your children with autism the education they need to develop their self-confidence, their academic skills and their life skills.

Specialist facilities

Thames Valley School has been purpose built to provide the ideal environment for children with autism. Our spaces have been created to allow each of our students to work in a setting that makes them feel calm and motivated to work together. If a student needs time apart from others to learn and work successfully, many of our classrooms has an individual room attached for this purpose.

Our main hall offers a space for many activities including badminton, yoga and basketball, and we have a number of play areas outside for sports lessons, football games, a gym, trampoline, trim trail, table tennis tables at lunch time or an opportunity to chill in the pagoda. The leisure centre next door provides a space for further physical and recreational activities including swimming.

Home school links

We have links with several colleges including Reading College and East Berkshire College, pupils historically have taken a wide range of courses. We have high aspirations for all our pupils, preparing them for college, employment, and adulthood.

We spend lots of time with our students and parents and get to know them well, so we can ensure their individual plans use the approaches and strategies that meet their needs.

General environment

All our students at Thames Valley School are part of the school community, our learning environment enables pupils to develop their skills, confidence, and self-esteem.

Every morning we have a breakfast club, so our children can socialise with students of various age groups before their day begins.

Our school council is the voice of our students – meeting every two weeks, delegates from each class have an input on what is happening at school, from planning fundraising activities to voicing views, debating, and making suggestions to aspects of the school they would like to change.

Aims and philosophy

We want every child with autism to receive the education that they deserve, and for them to feel happy and valued at school and feel proud they are autistic. Our aim is to support them to achieve and to make a positive contribution to the world.

We want our students to prepare for life after school, and we do this by accessing the local community as much as possible, from going out to a local museum, place of worship or monument to camping trips or visits from community police officers.

By building strong connections with local businesses, colleges, and communities we hope to both create a stronger local awareness of autism as well as inclusion opportunities for our students and other children with autism.

Staff qualification and selection

All our staff are professional, caring and dedicated and are trained to work with young people with autism.
