St John's Catholic School for the Deaf
Special needs catered for
Hearing impaired, speech, language and communication difficulties and multi-sensory impairment.
Specialist facilities
All pupils are taught by teachers with additional qualifications in deafness or multi-sensory impairments. The school classrooms are acoustically treated and benefit from Soundfield technology. There is a resident audiologist and a team of specialist speech and language therapists who support pupils’ language and learning. Health and medical needs are coordinated by the school nurse and supported by a programme of personal, social and health education. There are strong links with the local child and adolescent mental health team who specialise in working with deaf young people.
The residential areas are homely and welcoming. Residential children live in small family units and are looked after by an experienced and knowledgeable staff team. There is a full programme of leisure activities, and children have the opportunity to participate in local clubs and sports societies.
Support services provided
In addition to the 20 qualified teachers of the deaf, support is also available from an audiologist and five speech and language therapists. The school also has teachers responsible for individual and additional support. Medical cover is provided by the school’s own nurse and the local medical centre.
Home school links
Very close links with families are maintained, with regular updates on progress and achievements. Parents are welcome to visit the school, and are kept up to date with activities by the half termly newsletter.
General environment
The school is within walking distance of the elegant and vibrant Georgian village of Boston Spa. The extensive buildings are well equipped and include a gym with specialist fitness equipment, a purpose built theatre and sound recording room, a fully stocked library and IT suite and sensory rooms. The grounds are perfect for sports and leisure activities, with marked pitches and a newly-developed sensory garden.
Aims and philosophy
The school uses an oral approach to develop spoken and written language. Barriers to learning are removed by having specialist teaching and support staff. Ambition, self-esteem and confidence are encouraged and nurtured in all pupils. The school welcomes pupils of all faiths and denominations.
