Specialist facilities
Foxes Academy, located in Minehead, Somerset is an independent residential specialist college and training hotel for young people with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. It takes learners from across the country whose disabilities include hearing impairments, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
The focus of the college is on training learners for working in the catering and hospitality industry. It has a fully operational hotel that is open to the public. Learners live in residential houses throughout Minehead and are matched to each house depending upon their ability and the progress they make while at Foxes. They learn independent living skills and experience community-based learning, which also prepares them for life after college.
Support services provided
Each student’s timetable comprises a wide range of lessons, enrichment activities, visits, visitors, work experience and cultural events over time. Together these are planned to support students’ journeys to increased independence and meaningful adulthood.
As preparation for the world of work is central to the Aurora Foxes ‘work ready, life ready’ approach, soft employment skills are delivered throughout the curriculum and Aurora Foxes prides itself in delivering on all 8 of the Gatsby Benchmarks of good careers provision.
Home school links
We have built partnerships with a range of local employers and community groups to ensure work experiences beyond our hotel and we are particularly proud of our two national partners, Hilton Hotels and Sodexo, both of which are able to offer graduates support with employability and for some, real employment opportunities when they leave.
General environment
At Aurora Foxes, we promote good mental health with small group and individual therapy sessions. Behaviour plans and visual resources help maximise independence and manage anxieties, while ability to self-advocate is developed through awareness programmes and innovative therapy materials to help grow confidence.
Aims and philosophy
Our curriculum has been built on the five founding values of Aurora: Caring; Ambitious; Collaborative; Trusted; Innovative. Its aims are clear: to support all our students to go on to be confident, successful and healthy adults who have the skills, attitudes and aptitude to gain meaningful employment and to live as independently as possible. In short, rounded individuals, ready to take their place in society.
