Hillcrest Shifnal School

Special needs catered for

Hillcrest Shifnal School provides highly effective education, therapy and support for both boys and girls aged from 5 to 19 years with social, emotional and mental health needs (SEMH). Many of the pupils we support have additional SEND needs.

Specialist facilities

The school is purpose built with dedicated on-site facilities as well as established links with the amenities offered in the local area such as local colleges, businesses, charities and sport centres.

Support services provided

The school’s designated team reflects the needs of the children and young people that learn with us, however additional support can also be accessed from other specialists within the wider Clinical Team. This enables us to be responsive to any newly identified, time limited or changing needs of a child or young person throughout their placement with us.

Offering highly specialised screening, assessment, consultation, reflective practice supervision and bespoke training, the embedded Clinical Team work directly with the education team to develop a shared understanding of the child’s presenting needs and difficulties which may act as barriers to their personal and educational development as well as identify areas of strength which can support them to achieve, enjoy and fulfil their aims and wishes.

The clinical team support the education team in developing a pupil centred curriculum which proactively promotes the children and young people’s emotional, social and mental health. We aim to deliver the highest quality provision which maximises each person’s quality of life and personal achievements.

Our evidence informed models are based on best practice guidance and are governed through the Outcomes First Governance Framework.

Home school links

The curriculum is provided in a structured and supportive environment and is planned to meet the personal, academic and pastoral needs of the student at each stage of their schooling.

Hillcrest Shifnal School offers an education which exposes students’ to a broad, balanced, differentiated and relevant curriculum, presents them with challenges in which creativity is fostered and which is based on the essential elements of the National Curriculum. Other courses such as Outdoor Education, Duke of Edinburgh, Fishing and Animal Care are delivered in a mixture of onsite and offsite facilities, supporting students’ interests and aspirations.

The school has an excellent adult to student ratio with class sizes of around five students, which are taught and supported by at least two staff in every lesson. This enables us to give our children high levels of support at all times.

Aims and philosophy

Hillcrest Shifnal School strive to provide learning experiences and opportunities that will enhance the lives of all the students we educate. We are inclusive of all backgrounds and abilities with our key focus being learning through emotional intelligence and developing resilience within our students.

Our aim is to provide a balanced and bespoke curriculum which will enable students the room to grow and develop into confident, creative and become well-rounded members of the community. We achieve this through promoting Emotional Literacy and SMSC, as well as raising the awareness and understanding of the environment and the world. Students are specifically supported to develop their skills in literacy and numeracy throughout the curriculum as well as building upon their communication skills and self-esteem. Specialist staff work with students to develop positive working relationships and to provide a cohesive, nurturing environment within which every individual can thrive. Our students will learn to celebrate success as well as having the skills to adapt to change and learn from mistakes. Hillcrest Shifnal School is a place where everybody is somebody and everyone works hard to achieve this aim.
